Look at the site you are designing in many different browsers. What you’re seeing in one browser may not actually be what other people are seeing. Always go out of your way to discover what browsers are the most popular and design your site to work efficiently in all of them. Have a friend or colleague pull up your site in an alternate operating system to ensure their view is comparable to your own.
Make sure that your website has a tagline incorporated into the design. This tagline includes a company motto or statement that tells the reader a little bit about the business. Having a tagline is important; most users know if they will stay on a page after about eight seconds, so you need to do whatever it takes to keep their attention.
Ensure your site can pass the NoScript test. You want to activate NoScript after downloading the extension on Firefox so that you can read your site. Certain content cannot be read unless scripts are present. A blank site without scripts can create big problems.
Frame designs were great in the 1990s, but they are no longer useful. The fact is that while frames were popular in the past, they were simply one of many early techniques that were necessary then but are not today. They are the stone wheel of the Internet generation and should not be used today. Visitors are bookmark junkies and frames make that task extremely difficult and a simple scroll an annoying effort. There are easier ways for you to give your users good flow throughout the website.
Consider your website’s background carefully. Some sites have moving GIF backgrounds, which can be great at times, but can make your text difficult to read at other times. Make your site easy to read by choosing a background that complements the design of your website and doesn’t overwhelm it.
Keep your topics separated. When you focus on different discussion topics, give each one its own page. Your content will be more readable to your visitors and more visible to search engines, resulting in higher rankings.
Set up your website so that people can easily search it. This is especially important if you have a large website. People have become accustomed to search boxes being in the upper-right corner of the page, so put it there. These should let you at least search for one term, but it’s better if it allows multiple terms. You can use Google search or FreeFind, as they both give you access to an engine which is free and simple to use.
